Eternalists are the NPCs and AI-controlled mob enemies, encountered by either Colt or Julianna across the maps of Deathloop.
The name "Eternalist" is a term likely derived from a philosophical approach known as "Eternalism", which is based on a view that every singular existence in time is equally real.

Whilst not immediately relevant to the game, the approach is somewhat referenced in the ideology the Eternalists hold on to; and to an extent it comes true within the Loop as every instance of the Loop reset locks them into a four-dimensional "block".

About[]

Eternalists are the manpower behind the AEON Program: under the leading hands of the Visionaries they have built the Isle of Blackreef from the ground up. Almost. They are the faceless, nameless people that Colt Vahn meets as he traverses through the island, working out its mysteries and secrets. And they all want him dead[1].

Gameplay[]

Eternalists are all hostile to Colt, and will enter alert mode when catching a sight of him. They are, however, hospitable towards Julianna and even greet her when she walks among them, e.g. "Happy First Day, Julianna!" and other lines. However, if they notice Julianna killing a Visionary or killing too many of their fellow Eternalists, they also enter the alert mode, now searching for her as well as for Colt.

Types of Eternalists[]

Nearly all eternalists are armed and hostile (with few exceptions). However there are some small differences.

Regular Eternalists[]

Armed with Machete or any regular gun except PT-6 Spiker.

Eternalist Scouts[]

Found amongst the numbers of normal Eternalists and recognized by their solid-color palette. They are always armed with Tribunàl or PT-6 'Spiker'. They have communication devices that allow them to call for backup. When alerted they will always run away and hide while raising an alarm which will send additional Eternalists towards Colt's position. They can be hacked to prevent this communication. They are always located in the the same places on the map.

Glowing Eternalists[]

Better equipped Eternalists with a hazey residuum cloud around them - this equipment makes them tougher and more dangerous. They will drop higher quality Trinkets and Weapons on death, depending on Loop Stress (Exemplar quality on High and Maximum). They are always located in the the same places on the map.

Golden Glowing Eternalists[]

Added in GOLDENLOOP

There is a chance that Glowing Eternalist will become Golden at Maximum Loop Stress (one per map). They will drop one of the 2-for-1 Trinkets, as well as Exemplar weapon(s) and Trinkets. Easily identifiable by their Golden Glow.

Paint BombersGoldenLoop-OO's[]

Added in GOLDENLOOP

Covered in explosives, these Eternalists will charge Colt in a suicide run before blowing up.

Eternalists are expected to follow the three Tenets, shaping their day around the Visionary they are subordinate to.

As per Harriet's abandonment of classification and masks introduction, every Eternalist has to wear a mask to conceal their identity—this was a mean to equalize the Eternalists between themselves to avoid creating any class-related mistreatment. Strong evidence[2] suggests that some Visionaries do not consider their fellow colleagues to be anything above an Eternalist, however the Visionaries are the only people to not wear a mask (except Pick Rexly), since they assume the highest position in the AEON Program.

Aside from the Tenets, Eternalists are subject to the rules of AEON Coital Center, as per Code of Conduct.

Special Sightings[]

Aside from interactive Eternalists like Betty or Angry Eternalist, there are some Eternalists that Colt can encounter who don't have a name to them:
