The Anomaly is a supreme condition in Deathloop.

Overview[]

The Anomaly is a localized event of supernatural origin. It appears as a rippling overlay dome above the Blackreef island and is the source of the game's titular time loop. The origin of the Anomaly remains unknown, and it has been a point of interest for different organizations since its discovery.

History[]

According to the documents of Operation Horizon, the Anomaly existed prior to the 1930s and was the primary reason for the organization of the expedition. After their arrival on Blackreef, Horizon built the Stabilizer Antenna to examine the power and possibilities of its influence and, if successful, harness its potential.

During Horizon's time on the island, its researchers reported various side-effects of prolonged exposure to the Anomaly's influence, such as visions or temporal abnormalities[1][2]. Despite these phenomena, the expedition's leaders did not falter in their pursuit of discovery.

At some point, General Chen Novak, the acting head of operations on the mainland, delivered an ultimatum to General Jurgen Berezin, the acting head of the expedition: within six months, produce any kind of proof that examination of the Anomaly is worth the government's funding and attention[3].

Originally, the researchers of the Yasen Station predicted that the Anomaly would be in the appropriate state for more intrusive research in eight months. However, it was later discovered that the destabilization of the Anomaly would happen sooner than previously thought, so Katrina Pistchek, the Head Scientist of Operation Horizon, decided to move the schedule forward by six weeks without receiving confirmation from her commanding officers[4].

Thus, the operatives initiated the test flight of the Rakyetoplan with Captain Colt Vahn behind the controls[5].
